Objective 1: Leaf nutrient thresholds Samples were collected from all of the groves in this study in the month of August. Tree growth and leaf nutrient samples were taken for analysis. A database of scanned leaves is being created for analysis across all of the sampled areas. The scanned leaves are in the process of being analyzed for leaf shape characteristics such as leaf perimeter, circularity, major and minor axis, and total area. The data from these measurements as well as nutrition, dry weights, and tree health measurements will be analyzed using a neural network software to try to make sense of the massive amounts of data being collected. Each site was also sampled for qPCR and starch analysis. Objective 2: Determine soil conditions that favor root hair and VAM proliferation i. All of the soil samples from the Indian River production region have been received and scanned using the spectrometer for color analysis, as well as having been analyzed in the lab for Organic matter content. These samples were sent to Waters Ag lab for basic soil analysis. ii. The aeroponic cuttings are continuing to be monitored and maintained with replacement solutions bi-weekly. The solution chemistries are stable at this point; however, the growth of the cuttings has been slow. So far no root hairs have developed, in the triple calcium phosphate tank, the rock phosphate tank or the control tank. Analysis of the root development will be the next step of this portion of the study.
